Drawing

Hello I am Priyanka..

I am one of the participants of Gully lab and I am excited to tell about our new activity under Gully lab project. Our new activity is drawing and painting. Till now we learned Katthak Dance in Gully lab and did practice Kathak at home as all of us are at home because of Corona pandemic.

In lockdown we were getting bored at home and one day surprisingly Shradhatai told us that we are going to learn painting online. My friend and I were very happy to hear this. All of us learn drawing as a subject in school and many of us like to draw and paint pictures.

On 19th July Shradhatai sent us Google meet app link to join an online session. This was our first experience to learn something online. Initially we had introductory session with Vaidehitai who is a student of architecture and she volunteered to teach us drawing. In our first session Vaidehitai told us about different types of drawing like object drawing, abstract painting, water color & oil painting & doodle art using lines or dots. After this she taught us object drawing wherein we drew green capsicum with pencil shading. It was an interactive session. All of us drew capsicum and sent photographs of it in our Gully lab group.

After looking at all photographs we laughed a lot to see everyone’s capsicum. Every picture was very different from each other, few capsicums were small and few were big. But Vaidehi Tai gave us inputs regarding where we need to improve, how to hold pencil while shading the picture, how to show light and shadow effect just by using a pencil etc. At the end she also gave us an assignment of drawing a picture of an orange with crayon shading.

In second session that is on August 9, Vaidehi Tai taught us how to draw and paint nature picture with the help of crayon shading. She taught us drawing in two steps, first how to draw nature picture with pencil and in second step how to color it by creating shades by mixing two colors and coloring. Because of the clear instructions and detailing many of us could draw nicely but my friend Shahista’s drawing was the most beautiful.

Our third session was conducted on 16th August. We learned a different type of art that day. It included a single color and pattern of small dots called as Stippling. Basically stippling is the creation of the pattern simulating varying degrees of solidity or shading by using small dots, lines or shapes. We learned to draw a flower in stippling that day. As usual we all shared our pictures of our drawings on our group and our mentor Vaidehitai appreciated my picture the most.

On our second last session that is on 30th August we learned one more beautiful form of art, Doodle art. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be composed of random and abstract lines, generally without ever lifting the drawing device from the paper. We draw a leaf by using different patterns, shapes such as circles, semicircles, triangles, line and dots. My friend Prstiksha’s doodling art was best amongst all of us.

Our last online session was informative one wherein Vaidehitai spoke about various career opportunities if, we decided to pursue drawing. For that she gave us few basic instructions like if at all drawing is our area of interest we should appear for the elementary and intermediate drawing exams conducted by government at the school level only. She also said that consistency is the key to success hence we should practice drawing regularly. As far as career opportunities are concerned she said after passing 10th grade we can pursue fine arts to get formal education in any type of art like painting, sculpture, pottery etc. After completing fine arts one can start his /her own studio to train, to sell their creations and also there is scope for exhibitions.

She told us if you want to study architecture, you have to pass 12th standard in science with mathematics and also need to clear NATA entrance exam.

If one wants to pursue designing branch, it is very important to pass 12th std with mathematics and clear entrance for designing. She also told us about following few types of career opportunities in designing.

Product Designing: It involves drawing various objects like working on what a new product will look like.eg shoes, jewelry, cutlery etc.

Textile designing: It teaches us about cloth designing. It is very useful while working in the fashion industry. It is also in high demand in large textile companies.

Commercial & Industrial designing:  It is used where large quantities of the same product are to be produced like making tiles, gadgets, electronics etc.

Landscape designing:  It is an independent profession which is practiced by landscape designers where they design landscape and gardens.

Through these five sessions of drawing activity we learned basic types of drawing, techniques of shading and what are the future career prospects for drawing and how can we pursue our career in it.
